Teachers call for strike on first day of school

The Independent Teachers Movements has called for a general strike on Saturday, the first day of the school year. The Ministry of Education responded by declaring it would dock pay of the teachers who didn’t show up for work.

The teachers are demanding a minimum wage of LE3,000 per month, higher pensions and better bonuses.

They called on parents not to send their children to school on that day, and denounced their syndicate for not standing by them.

The protesters say better wages would improve the quality of education and spare parents LE22 million per year paid for private tutors, according to statistics.
