Uneasy calm returns to Mahalla

Calm returned to some parts of Mahalla Tuesday after confrontations between security forces and protesters around Mahalla Police Station and Shaun Square dragged on for hours Monday.

Protesters hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at the police station and burned tires at Shaun Square, demanding the release of suspects detained after recent clashes. Security personnel responded by firing tear gas and chasing protesters onto to Baher Street in order to regain control of the square and the area near the police station.

Security forces remain deployed around the square as some clashes continued on side streets.

Mohamed Sharshar, the Health Ministry deputy in Gharbiya, said on Monday that there were no new injuries.
