Update: Protesters close streets around cathedral

Protesters have closed Ramses Street which leads to the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, while the surrounding area remains calm under tight security since Monday morning, according to MENA.

Traffic officers have redirected cars to Ahmed Said Square to resolve the congestion.

Eleven people have been arrested for involvement in the violence outside the cathedral, according to Abdel Fattah Othman, the Assistant Interior Minister for Media and Public Affairs.

Clashes between Copts and unknown individuals outside the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Abbasseya came to a close on Monday morning after security officials intervened to end fighting that left two dead and 89 injured according to the latest Ministry of Health announcement.

Security did not fire tear gas towards the cathedral, Othman told Al-Masry Al-Youm, but was rather targeting gunmen on its rooftops who hurled molotovs and stones at the forces, noting 16 police personnel were injured as a result.

The clashes began as the cathedral was conducting funeral services for four Copts killed earlier on Friday in armed clashes with Muslim neighbors in Khosous, Qalyubiya, reportedly after a group of boys spray-painted derogatory graffiti on the walls of an Islamic school.

The funeral was attacked by unknown assailants on Sunday, sparking a day-long battle.

Security officials on Monday called upon Copts stationed on the cathedral’s rooftops to get down.

Local groups organized traffic as it restored its flow in the street outside the church and trash vehicles started to clear the site of the clashes.

The Health Ministry’s emergency director, Khaled al-Khatib, said told state news agency MENA that of the two killed, one has been identified as Mahrous Hanna Ibrahim, 30, while the other victim remains unknown.

He said that 66 of the injured had left hospital after receiving treatment.
