VIDEO: Unlicensed kiosk owner pleads for ‘mercy’ when shutting down his business

An owner of an unlicensed kiosk pleaded to Cairo Governor Galal Mostafa Saeed on Wednesday while he was inspecting the Al-Darb al-Ahmar district, saying the government has destroyed his only means of breadwinning.

The governor was checking the validity of shop licenses before removing any violations.

The man cried in front of reporters: "Mercy! Mercy! Mercy is not above the law!"

The new government of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has pushed for clearing of unlicensed vendors in the streets, many of whom sprung up in the regulatory vacuum after the 25 January revolution.

Footage of the Cairo governor's inspection can be seen here.
