All-Egyptian final in the Squash World Championship

The squash court in Manchester will celebrate four Egyptian winners on Monday as the World Squash Championships rounds up with four Egyptian finalists. In the ladies’ tournament, the world’s best Nour El Sherbini will battle against the world’s second best Raneem El Weleily.

As for the men, in addition to two Egyptians, Marwan and Mohamed El-Shorbagy, reaching the finals, this is the first time in the history of the Squash World Championships that two brothers will compete for the title.

The men played impressively in their not-so-easy semi-finals, with Mohamed El-Shorbagy knocking out the world’s number one Gregory Gaultier of France on Saturday. As for Marwan El-Shorbagy, he secured a win over teammate and fellow Egyptian Ali Farag.

“Greg is 34 years old, and I’m 26 and that’s the 22nd time we’ve played on the Tour, that shows how great he is as a player and what he achieved,” ElShorbagy told the tournament’s official website.

As for the women, El-Sherbini reached the final at the expense of fellow Egyptian Nour El Tayeb, after beating the world number 8 in a close match of 3-2. As for El Weleily she cruised to a 3-0 win over France’s Camille Serme.

Commenting on her win, El Welily said, “Happy to be through today. It’s never easy against Camille.”

As for El-Sherbini, she admitted her win over El Tayeb was not easy, “It was a very tough game, Nour is playing so well this season, and has beaten so many top players,” El Sherbini told the tournament’s official website.

El-Welily has been fighting badly to earn her spot as the queen of the tournament, “I have been wanting this title so much so badly in the past, it didn’t work out, so no pressure this time, I’m just trying to enjoy every second of it.”

The four Egyptians have a track record of winning in large tournaments. El Welily holds a World Ranking of second and World series ranking of first. As for El-Sherbini, she ranks first in the World Ranking  and second in the World Series Ranking. The men are also within the top league, with Mohamed El Shorbagy ranking second and first in the World Ranking and the World Series Ranking respectively and his brother Marwan ranking fifth in the World Ranking and fourth in the World Series Ranking.
