Antiquities council to request return of Nefertiti bust

The Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) will convene this week to discuss details of a request for Germany to return the Nefertiti bust to Egypt.

SCA Secretary General Zahi Hawass met Sunday in Cairo with the curator of the Berlin museum currently in possession of the bust. She showed Hawass a protocol signed by the German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt who discovered the bust in 1912. The protocol describes the bust as being that of a royal princess and made of gypsum, which proves that Borchardt intentionally faked the description.

Hawass said that Egypt had previously offered to give the Berlin museum another piece of antiquity in return for the bust, but the offer was declined.
