Criminal courts hold jurisdiction over demonstration lawsuits: SCC

The Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) ruled on Saturday that only criminal courts have jurisdiction over lawsuit that deal with demonstrations, after Beni Suef criminal court and military court had a dispute over eligibility to adjudicate three cases of violence and demonstration.

The court said that no military personnel participated in the demonstrations, which resulted in public disturbances and traffic jams due to possession of fireworks, knives, Molotov cocktails, prints and posters. The protest called to amend the constitution forcibly by overthrowing the regime.

The court added that as long as the defendants did not attack installments, utilities or public properties under the security of the armed forces, the ordinary judiciary, not the military one, must rule in these cases.
