DP World negotiating to end Ain Sokhna strike

Dubai Ports World pledged its full support to workers from the Platinum Company to ensure that they will be transferred to new staffing companies at the Ain Sokhna Port, in a bid to end a labor strike that has dragged on for more than a week.

In a statement late Sunday, DP World thanked workers for their willingness to collaborate in ending the strike, and said that intensive negotiations were ongoing. The company added that its statement was meant to reassure workers that their jobs would be safe.

The strike began after DP World ended its contract with the Platinum Company, which is a private staffing company. Workers at the port, fearing dismissal, went on strike to demand permanent employment.

Ain Sokhna, near the southern end of the Suez Canal, is Cairo's main port for cargo from the Far East. Last month, the DP World-managed port brought the Egyptian government LE11.241 billion.
