Egypt’s FM heads to Ethiopia to resume discussions on Renaissance Dam

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry will meet his Ethiopian counterpart Workneh Gebeyehu on Tuesday to discuss bilateral cooperation between the two countries in addition to the latest developments of the tripartite technical committee’s meetings concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

The official spokesperson of Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abu Zaid stated that the visit aims to resume the technical path which Egypt resorted to in full compliance with the terms of the tripartite framework agreement.

Shukry will offer ideas which will help the tripartite technical committee to quickly adopt the consulting office’s initial report, paving the way to finish the studies on the dam within the time frame set out in the Declaration of Principles, Abu Zaid clarified.

He added that Shoukry will also discuss arrangements of the Ethiopian Prime Minister Haile Mariam Desaline’s visit to Egypt in January 2018.

Director of the African Program at the Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies Amany al-Tawel hinted that Shoukry’s visit will be the last step to prove good intentions towards Ethiopia before taking unilateral escalating steps through the African Union, the United Nations and the UN Security Council.

“The visit ensures Egypt’s keenness on reaching a cooperative framework to avoid the eruption of a crisis,” Deputy Head of Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies said.
