FJP leader: Morsy to visit Germany in January

The Egyptian and German foreign ministries are arranging for a visit by President Mohamed Morsy to Berlin in January, Freedom and Justice Party President Saad al-Katatny said.

Morsy’s visit to Germany would positively reflect Egyptian interests, Katatny said in an interview with state newspaper Al-Ahram in Berlin, on the sidelines of a visit to boost communication with political parties and decision-makers.

Katatny said the visit came after a request by the German foreign ministry. The trip will be Morsy's second to Europe; he visited Italy in September to meet Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and strengthen bilateral ties.

The visit will not tackle relations with Israel or the party’s stance toward the Middle East peace process in detail, the former People’s Assembly speaker added.

“They want to be reassured [regarding] treaties that Egypt had signed,” Katatny said. “I assured them that Egypt is an important country and is committed to its international treaties, with a condition of preserving its national security. We keep our treaties and never review them, unless in case of necessity.”
