Khartoum to host Sudan-Egypt 2nd session of Political Consultation Committee

The Sudanese capital Khartoum will host on Thursday the second session of the meetings of the Sudanese-Egyptian Committee for Political Consultation, headed by Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Sudanese counterpart Ibrahim Ghandour.

Sudan's Ambassador to Cairo, Abdel Mahmoud Abdel Halim, said there was a warm welcome in Khartoum for Shoukry's visit, which he considered an excellent opportunity to discuss pending issues between Egypt and Sudan at this time.

Abdel Halim told Al-Masry Al-Youm that he expects the visit to greatly contribute to calming down recent tensions between the two countries; pointing out that the Political Consultative Committee will discuss the implementation of agreements signed during the summit of Presidents Omar al-Bashir and Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

Also on the agenda are discussions pertaining to the Charter of Strategic Partnership between the two countries; and ways of strengthening relations through communication between the two peoples.

Abdel Halim added: "What saddened us in recent developments was that the tension had reached the two peoples and we do not want that, because our bet has always been on the strong and vital relations between the two brotherly peoples."

Sudan's Ambassador to Cairo also mentioned that arrangements are underway for a meeting between Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir and Shoukry.

During the first round of the Political Consultation Committee's meetings, the two foreign ministers had agreed to establish a joint consular committee to be held alternately between the two countries.

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Qareebullah al-Khader said that the Political Consultative Committee also discussed at its previous session means of holding the meetings of the 8th session of the Supreme Presidential Committee, which was previously known only as the 'Supreme Committee' before Sisi and Bashir agreed to upgrade it in their meeting in Cairo in October 2016.
