Activist investigated over accusations of libeling judges

Judge Tharwat Hammad on Tuesday released political activist Alaa Abdel Fattah without bail in relation to his alleged defamation of judges.

Summonned on Tuesday for investigations, Abdel Fattah was accompanied by his father,  Ahmed Seif who is a prominent lawyer and human rights activist who previously ran the Hisham Mubarak Center for Law, as well as a number of lawyers.

Prosecutors had conducted investigations with talk show hosts of private satellite channels against whom charges were lodged by 1164 judges, accusing them of allowing their guests to speak badly of the judiciary.

The military police had arrested Abdel Fattah in October 2011 against the backdrop of the Maspero violent events in which 27 protesters were killed, mostly Coptic Christians. He was charged with incitement against the military establishment during the clashes, and was released in December 2011.
