Baboons terrify Cape Town neighborhood

A neighborhood in the suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa, faced a nightmare when it was attacked by a gang of burglaring baboons.

The monkeys invaded people's houses, terrorizing, attacking, and robbing its residents, according to a story published by the Daily Mail.

It has become an open war between Scarborough residents and the baboons.  Indeed, every open window symbolizes an opportunity for the monkeys to break into a house, destroy its appliances, and rob and attack its residents.

Not only the houses, however. They also attack people in the street and steal their food.

Baboons know what they are looking for. Once they break into a house, they head to the kitchen and target the fridge.

Other monkeys prefer to have fun with a child's toys or with house furniture. But even the trash bin has proven to be of use to some of the baboons.

“For humans, the weapons of choice – given that their enemy is a protected species – tend to be paintball guns and pepper spray. They have the momentary effect of driving the baboons away, but hunger and sheer nerve always bring them back,” the Mail reports.

Baboons have been a protected species in the Cape Peninsula since 1999. There are now around 500 baboons living there.
