Egypt presents plan to gradually lift Gaza siege

Senior Palestinian officials told The Associated Press that Egypt presented a plan to the Palestinian and Israeli sides to gradually lift the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip and postpone outstanding issues, such as the Palestinian demand for a complete lifting of the blockade and the Israeli demand to disarm Hamas to a later date.

The sources, however, did not say if the plan was by both sides.

The plan includes a pledge by Israel to stop the air strikes and gradually ease the blockade and reduce the 500-meter buffer zone between Gaza and Israel that the Palestinians are not allowed to enter.

The Israeli Walla website on Wednesday quoted a Palestinian official as saying that the Egyptian plan includes stopping assassinations carried out by Israel from the air.

Israeli Defense Ministry sources, however, said Israel does not conduct systematic assassinations.

Differences still exist on the establishment of an airport and a seaport in Gaza and the opening of a safe passage between the West Bank and Gaza.
