Egyptian ‘cured of Ebola’ returns to Cairo

An Egyptian man reportedly cured of Ebola has been quarantined in Cairo as a precaution after returning from Sierra Leone, state media reported Friday.

The 35-year-old had received treatment in Sierra Leone and tested negative for the virus before landing in Cairo on Thursday, the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported on its website.

Health Minister Adel al-Adawi said the man, who had contacted the government before his arrival, was met at the airport by a medical team, which transferred him to hospital as a "precaution," the newspaper reported.

The Ebola epidemic has infected more than 6,200 people in West Africa since late last year and killed nearly half of them, according to the World Health Organisation.

The virus can kill within days, causing high fever, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, and in some cases unstoppable bleeding.
