Egyptian foreign ministry demands France and EU to denounce terrorism in Egypt

Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy demanded French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and the European Union adopt a clear, strong stance against acts of violence and terrorism in Egypt, whether in Sinai or in other parts of the country. He also asked that they take into consideration the nature of this special period in Egypt while reaching their stances on the events.

This came during the minister’s visit to France which began on Saturday.

Fahmy stressed the Egyptian government rejected acts of violence and terrorism and assured its commitment to restoring security and safety to the Egyptian citizens, according to Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Badr Abdel Atty.

Fahmy also emphasized the government's commitment to the roadmap for the transitional period, which would ensure the participation of all Egyptian political forces in the political process provided they renounce violence.

The spokesman noted that Fahmy and Fabius both addressed the situation in Syria. Fahmy stated Egypt's clear rejection of the use of force against Syria based on the need to respect the Charter of the United Nations.

He said, however, that Egypt had a clear stance against the use of chemical weapons in any armed conflict and demanded those responsible for the attacks be brought to justice if evidence were found against them.

The minister stressed Egypt's support for reaching a political solution on the Syrian crisis in order to ensure the unity of the Syrian state and to achieve the aspirations of its people towards freedom and democracy.

The minister added that Egypt supports the Palestinian people's aspiration to achieve an independent state based on the borders of June 1967 with its capital in East Jerusalem. He emphasized the need for Israel to review its policies and stop adopting positions that impede ongoing negotiations under American supervision.
