Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan has suggested that Israel is behind the military intervention in Egypt that removed President Mohamed Morsy in early July.
Turkey, and its ruling Islamist-oriented Justice and Development Party (AKP), has been a staunch ally to the Muslim Brotherhood regime and a harsh critic of Morsy’s removal.
“Israel is behind the coup in Egypt, we have evidence,” Erdoğan told members of his party meeting in Ankara on Tuesday in statements quoted by Today’s Zaman newspaper. Erdogan cited a French Jewish intellectual, without mentioning his name, who, according to Erdoğan, said in 2011 that the Muslim Brotherhood would not be in power even if they are elected because “democracy is not the ballot box.”
