Ethiopian ambassador: 42% of Renaissance dam constructed

Ethiopia's Ambassador to Cairo, Mahmoud Dreier Ghedi announced that his country is determined to end the construction of the Renaissance Dam, of which 42 percent has been completed.

"Relations between Egypt and Ethiopia should not be reduced to the issue of the Renaissance dam. The great energy that will be produced by Ethiopia after the completion of the dam will benefit not only Addis Ababa, but the neighboring countries, particularly Egypt and Sudan," he told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

"Some of the circulated news in media are contrary to reality. Studies of experts from the tripartite committee confirm that the dam will not harm Sudan and Egypt," he added.

Ghedi said that Ethiopia will not benefit from the dam in the field of agriculture because the area around the dam is not suitable for agriculture.

"But Sudan will benefit from it in this area, and Egypt will benefit from it in terms of extending the High Dam's lifespan," he mentioned.

Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Badr Abdel Atty stressed that the Nile water agreements related to the rights and obligations toward Egypt have not been compromised at any time, including the 1902, 1929, 1959 agreements and others.
