Four held for smuggling arms from Libya

Military prosecutors in Alexandria ordered on Thursday that four people accused of endangering national security and possessing heavy arms be detained for 15 days pending investigations. The four were arrested in Beheira on Tuesday.

According to the ongoing investigation, the suspects entered the country from Libya through the Salloum border crossing. A two-meter rocket launcher, 101 small rockets, 48 projectiles, 12,225 bullets and four automatic guns were found in their truck. Authorities speculate that they were taking the weapons through Sinai to Gaza.

However, the suspects said they were transferring a shipment of tobacco-based molasses to Sinai and did not realize weapons had been stored in their truck.

The Interior Ministry released a statement saying that according to its investigation, four smugglers from Beheira Governorate were planning to store large amounts of weapons and drugs on a farm owned by one of them in the town of Badr.
