Francois Hollande's victory in the French presidential election is a victory for the global leftist movement, Egyptian presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabbahi has said.

"I was very happy and proud for victory of Francois Hollande. His winning is a great victory for the international leftist movement," Sabbahi posted on Twitter.

Hollande, the French Socialist Party candidate, won the race Sunday with 51.8 percent of the votes. He is the first socialist to return to the Elysee Palace in 17 years.

Sabbahi, who heads the Nasserist Karama Party, is one of three leftist candidates struggling in the heated presidential race, along with lawyer Khaled Ali and MP Abul Ezz al-Hariry.

Several leftist activists have tried to convince them to agree on one of them to run in the race.

In a poll conducted by Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies published Monday, Sabbahi came fourth after former Arab League chief Amr Moussa, former Muslim Brotherhood leader Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh and Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsy.
