Islamic thinker decides to run for president

Islamic thinker Mohamed Selim al-Awa has decided to run in the presidential elections in response to requests from his supporters, as his campaigners put it.

“He will personally announce the news once he returns from abroad,” said his campaign coordinator Ahmed Mostafa.

Wasat Party spokesman Tarek al-Malt said Awa would run independent of the party. “His name is bigger than any party,” he said.

His rival, Abdel Moneim Abouel Fottouh, meanwhile, was criticized in London by Egyptian activist Hazem al-Refaay, who accused him of pretending to be liberal, whereas he is, in fact, an ardent Muslim Brotherhood supporter.
