New deputy electricity minister chosen by FJP, sources say

President Mohamed Morsy has appointed Ahmed Imam, former head of the Cairo Electricity Production Company, as deputy electricity and energy minister.

Sources at the ministry told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the selection was based on the recommendation of the Freedom and Justice Party's Energy Committee.

Imam will focus on increasing the efficiency of power plants and halting their deterioration, which exacerbated power cuts over the summer, the sources said.

But some power plant engineers criticized the choice, saying Imam has damaged the relationship between engineers and ministry leaders.

In spite of being a high-level technical expert, the engineers said, Imam had made several administrative decisions that caused disagreement, prompting some senior engineers to leave.
