One killed and another injured in another attack on Sinai police facility

A young man was killed and another boy was injured as attackers opened fire at a police facility under construction in central Sinai early Monday, security sources said.

Sources told MENA that Selim Salem Madaan was shot in the head and stomach, and another 12-year-old boy was injured in the attack on al-Qassima police department. The source said that the boy was hospitalized at the central hospital in Arish.

The Sinai Peninsula has witnessed several attacks on police and army facilities since Egypt’s January 2011 revolution, mostly blamed on extremist and bedouin elements. The rate of attacks has increased with the overthrow of Mohamed Morsy on 3 July.

The army has recently been ratcheting up operations against criminal elements in the region. Anadolu Agency has put the number of militants killed since Morsy’s ouster at 37.
