Protesters in Tahrir call for independent judiciary

Hundreds of protesters staged a demonstration in Tahrir Square against President Mohamed Morsy and the Muslim Brotherhood on Tuesday.

They say Morsy’s government and ruling party have destroyed the judiciary.

Meanwhile, several members of the 6 April Youth Movement and the Democratic Front marched from the square to the North Cairo Court of First Instance to take part in another protest staged by a group of lawyers.

The demonstrators are calling for the protection of the judiciary’s independence.

Maged al-Masry, a lawyer who took part in the march, said, “We’ll head to the court to send a warning that the judiciary will never allow any political force to halt its work or destroy the apparatus.”

In related news, dozens of revolutionaries protested in front of the Cabinet building in downtown Cairo for a second consecutive day. They are demanding Moawwad Adel, a revolutionary that was injured during clashes with security forces, be treated at the state’s expense as was already ordered by a court.

Adel, known as the “Living Martyr,” has been in coma for 17 months following an injury he sustained during the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes in 2011.
