The Suez Canal made US$10 million in revenues in just one day after Mohamed Morsy was announced president, said a Suez Canal Authority official on Monday.

The official added that 37 vessels crossed the Suez Canal, with 15 vessels in the northern convoy coming from the Mediterranean and carrying one million tons, and 22 vessels in the southern convoy coming from the Red Sea and carrying 1.3 million tons.

The largest vessel was a Panamanian container carrying 158,000 tons on its way from Italy to Jeddah.

The waterway is a vital source of foreign currency in Egypt, along with tourism, oil and gas exports and remittances from Egyptians living abroad.
