رغم اعلان وزارة التعاون الدولي عن انتهاء الجزء الأول من المرحلة الأولى لمشروع إزالة الألغام بتكلفة تزيد على ٣ مليون دولار بتمويل مشترك بين مصر والأمم المتحدة والدول المعنية بزراعة الألغام فى أراضى الصحراء الغربية. الا أن تقديرات المساحات المتبقية الملغومة فى الصحراء الغربية تصل إلى ٢٤٨ ألف هكتار، يوجد بها نحو ١٧ مليون لغم ورؤوس متفجرة تصل تكلفة إزالتها وإخلائها، حسب تقدير القوات المسلحة المصرية، ٢٥٠ مليون دولار.
