Poll: Ramadan, Met’eb, Hasaan named personalities of the year

An Egyptian polling center on Tuesday named the personalities of the year based on Egyptian voter selection, in its third year conducting the poll.
 
The Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research, Baseera, chaired by former Telecommunication Minister Maged Othman, declared on Tuesday winners of “person of the year” in several fields including entertainment, sports, religious preaching as well as the best TV shows.
 
Salafi preacher Mohamed Hasaan was selected the best preacher of the year with 14 percent of votes, which is down from 24 percent last year. Young preacher Mostafa Hosny came second with 8 percent. Both come ahead of the Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayyeb, who came third with only 5 percent.
 
Ahly Club and Egypt national team striker Emad Met'eb was named the best footballer by 9 percent of votes. He was followed by his teammates Mahmoud (Trezeguet) Hassan scoring 5 percent of the votes, and Amr Gamal with 4 percent.
 
Amr Diab was chosen as the best singer with 12 percent, followed by Mostafa Kamel with 9 percent and Hany Shaker 5 percent.
 
Sherine Abdel Wahab became the best female singer with 12 percent of votes. Lebanese star Elissa came second with 9 percent, followed by her compatriot Asala with 8 percent. The ranking copies that of 2013.
 
The best actor title went to young Mohamed Ramadan with 16 percent, followed by comedy icon Adel Imam with 12 percent and Ahmed al-Saqqa, 8 percent.
 
Yousra became the best actress for 2014, according to the poll, with five percent, followed by Nelly Karim and Ghada Abdel Razek, both 4 percent.
 
The poll shows 37 percent of Egyptians could not decide on their favorite TV series, but 35 percent said Mohamed Ramadan’s "Ibn Halal" (A Good Guy) is the best show, followed by Nelly Karim’s "Segn al-Nessa" (Women’s Prison) with 4 percent and Adel Imam’s "Saheb al-Saada" (His Majesty), with two percent.
 
Baseera explained that the poll was carried out via mobile phones and land lines on a sample of 2,046 citizens aged 18 years old and above, covering all provinces between 22 and 27 December, setting the response rate at around 47%, and a margin of error in the results is less than 3%.
