  • Cardinal Sean Brady has apologised during mass in County Armagh for his role in mishandling the case of a serial child abuser, Fr Smyth. Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. 17/3/2010
The Irish Catholic primate, Cardinal Sean Brady shakes hands with parisioners after St.Patrick's Day mass in Armagh, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Wednesday 17th March 2010. Cardinal Sean Brady has apologised for his role in mishandling the case of a serial child abuser.
Brady said he was at meetings when two alleged victims of Fr Brendan Smyth signed an oath of silence. The complaints of abuse by the two teenagers were investigated by Cardinal Brady in his capacity as secretary to the Bishop of Kilmore in 1975. Cardinal Brady said he had been following his bishop's orders and there were no guidelines for dealing with such investigations at that time. Fr Smyth was a notorious child abuser. He is believed to have abused at least 20 children over a 40 year period and was convicted of more than 90 offences. For a period, he was based in Kilnacrott Abbey, County Cavan, which is in the diocese of Kilmore, and was buried there when he died in 1997. Demotix/PresseImage

  • Muhammadsharif Himmatzoda was elected IRPT's first leader in 1991 after the party was officially registered. When the civil war began in 1992, Himmatzoda left Tajikistan and joined the United Tajik Opposition (UTO) in exile, of which he was subsequently named deputy head. Himmatzoda returned to Tajikistan in 1997 after the signing of a UN-mediated peace agreement between the government of President Emomali Rahmon and the UTO. In 2000 Himmatzoda was elected to the lower house of parliament as an IRPT member. He was reelected to parliament in 2005. When IRPT spiritual leader Said Abdullo Nuri died of cancer in 2006, Himmatzoda stepped down as IRPT head to succeed him as spiritual leader. He protested strongly against a new state law on religion passed one year ago that has curtailed the activities of several non-Muslim religious groups and failed to officially register others. A parliamentary commission revoked his benefits last year in retaliation for his opposition to the religion law, whereupon Himmatzoda resigned his parliament mandate. Himmatzoda had been suffering from cancer for the past four years and rarely left his home. He was buried this morning in Dushanbe. The IRPT is the only officially registered political party in Central Asia with religious roots. (Tajik Service/ia/ec/pmb) Demotix/RFERL
