Experts, politicians see religious mobilization as a threat to democracy

Counting votes on constitutional amendments at a polling center, Port Said, March 19, 2011. As voting process came to an end, vote count started in earnest in one most anticipated poll in Egypt's history for decades. Egypt wintnessed an unprecedented polling turn-out since 8 AM at 54,000 polling centers nationwide, after a historic uprising which led to president Mubarak's ouster. Egyptians voted on amendments to nine constitution articles. The poll sees high controversy among political forces and Egyptians at large. So far, initial indications show "Yeah" outperforms "Nay" in count process. Sunday, March 20 evening, High Judiciary Committee on Constitutional Amendments announced 77.2% voted "Yeah" as opposed to 22.8% for "Nay" on amendments. Turnout, according to committee president, amounted to 18.5 million, at 41%, of registered voters.
