Sun perpendicular on King Ramses’s face in Aswan

The sun shone directly onto the face of King Ramses II on Sunday, located in Abu Simbel temple in Aswan province.

More than 2,000 visitors, including 800 tourists along with 400 physically-handicapped, attended the event. Aswan Governor Mostafa Youssry and several Egyptian actors and diplomats were there.

The event started at 6:24 am. The sun remained inside holiest part of the temple for 20 minutes.

Egyptologists say the solar phenomenon occurs twice every year, once on 22 February, which marks his coronation and the other on 22 October, which marks the king’s birthday.
