A huge lantern standing, all-lit, close to a mosque prior to Ramadan, Cairo, July 18, 2010. Lanterns occupy a special place in Egyptians' hearts. Dating back to Fatemide era, Egyptians first knew lanterns - as are known now in Ramadan - in 358 Hijri, when al-Moez Ledin Allah first came to Egypt, starting Fatemide rule of Egypt. Egyptians welcomed al-Moez shouting, holding flames - and carrying lanterns. Since then, lanterns have became gradually rooted in Egyptian culture nd are now used not only for lighting purposes but also for entertainment by children and adults, alike.
