Authorities begin removing billboards from Cairo’s downtown district

Authorities have begun implementing a decree issued by Cairo Governor Abdel Azim Wazir calling for the removal of all billboards and neon signs from the capital's historical downtown district in an effort to preserve the area's architectural heritage.

On Monday, advertising agency officials abruptly switched off all neon signs in the district as a way of registering their discontent with the move.

They also urged the governor to come up with an alternative solution, especially given that contracts for the advertising space in question had not yet expired.
