Court jails former MP for stealing LE22 mln in public funds

The Giza Criminal Court sentenced Sami Mahran, the former secretary general of the People’s Assembly, to three years in prison on Tuesday for stealing public funds worth LE22 million. The judge also ordered him to pay back the stolen funds and fined him another LE22 million.

The prosecution called a number of witnesses, who included three workers from real estate giant Talaat Moustafa Group. Court reports show the witnesses said Mahran demanded a villa at the firm’s premier Madinaty development for less than half the price.

He also negotiated a repayment program that spanned six years versus the typical four-year plan.

The Justice Ministry’s Illicit Gain Authority had referred Mahran’s case to the court following a year-long investigation.
