Egyptian archaeologist Hussein Abdel Baseer recounted details of the theft of British archaeologist Howard Carter, who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb, artifacts from the tomb.
Abdel Baseer added, during a telephone interview with TV presenter Azza Mustafa, on Sada al-Balad channel, Wednesday, that Oxford University will publish a new book entitled “Tutankhamun and the Cemetery that Changed the World,” in which it reveals the details of the theft of Tutankhamun’s archaeological holdings, carried out by Carter.
A correspondence between Carter and another British scientist named “Garner” confirmed the theft as Carter sent him an archaeological amulet in 1934 without informing him it was from Tutankhamun’s tomb.
He added that Garner was horrified when he discovered that the amulet was gifted to him from the tomb of Tutankhamun, but Carter was denied the theft of the tomb.
The Egyptian government at that time kept Carter away from the tomb, due to other problems.
Andel Baseer added that the Egyptian government in 2010 in recovered 19 artifacts that had been smuggled from the tomb of Tutankhamun.
