Egypt plans to replace tuk-tuks with minivans in major cities and governorates, spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Development Khaled Qassem announced.
Qassem added, during a telephone interview on the al-Mehwar channel, that tuk-tuks will still be allowed run on the side streets, but new restrictions for larger streets will soon be implemented.
He added tut-tuks that use unauthorized roads will have their licenses revoked.
The minivan replacement process is underway, and the cost of replacement will be proportional to a driver’s income, he said.
Minivans will be able to transport six, seven or eight passengers, he explained.
Moreover, a unified tariff would be set for operating a tuk-tuk in side streets or villages, in addition to coordination with the Ministry of Military Production to assemble minivans in Egypt.
Egypt has stopped important tuk-tuks for a year now, as the tiny vehicles have an increasingly bad reputation for their link to crime and accidents.
