Egypt rights group demands compliance on foreign bank accounts

The Egyptian Association for Retrieving Public Funds has called on the government to link Egypt’s foreign relations with countries' willingness to divulge secret bank accounts of former Egyptian officials.

Association Secretary General Mohamed Mahsoub said he had attended a meeting at the Foreign Ministry to discuss efforts at returning money transferred abroad. The cabinet had set up a committee to explore the issue.

“We suggested that we make our relations with those countries contingent on their willingness to cooperate in this matter,” he said, adding that Egypt will ask for the freezing the money until legal procedures aimed at retrieving it have been completed.

“We expect foreign financial institutions to be more cooperative once the committee starts negotiating with them,” he said.
