Egyptian ministry, WFP join forces against child labor

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is signing on Monday a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian Social Solidarity Ministry for a project to combat child labor through education.

The project is funded with 60 million euros from the European Union. It provides school meals and monthly food rations for more than 100,000 school children so as to encourage their parents to enroll them in schools and not send them to the labor market.

The project also trains 50,000 housewives and mothers to design and manage small projects and helps 10,000 of them obtain microloans.

The ministry, as well as civil society organizations, will provide technical support and follow up so as to ensure the sustainability of the project.
