TV host Lamis al-Hadidi on Monday revealed that preparations are underway within the National Elections Authority to announce the date of the upcoming Egyptian presidential elections, in accordance with constitutional dates set by opening the door for nominations and candidate submissions.
During her show “Last Word” (Kalema Akhera) on the ON satellite channel, Hadidi added that according to constitutional dates, the previous presidential term began on April 2 and will end on April 2, 2024.
She explained that as elections must be held about 120 days before the end of the presidential term according to the constitution, this falls on approximately December 2nd.
All expectations are for the presidential elections to be held in mid-December, she added, and the necessary dates and procedures may be announced in early October at the latest.
The hope of democracy
Hadidi explained that there are 65 million Egyptian citizens who have the right to vote, in accordance with the constitution and the law.
She said: “I do not want people to get bored of politics. It is true that people are busy making a living, but also we must know that political life provides the general framework and without a lively political life there cannot be a clear economic policy.”
The TV host expressed her hope that this election period and beyond will be the basis of a vibrant democratic political environment.
“Some consider criticism to take us backwards, and this is not true. We are entering a stage in which there is greater freedom of expression, media, and the press, and here is political life, which is vibrant, and this is what we hope for,” she explained.
“Opposition is not treason as long as we all agree within one national framework that there is no return to the Brotherhood. This is a clear line, and as long as we agree on that, everyone has the right to speak and have their point of view, and no one should be afraid if they want to express an opinion, “she said.
