Grand Sheikh calls for democratic civilian rule

Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb called for moving quickly to a democratic civilian rule following the six-month transition period specified by the Supreme Council for Armed Forces.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, al-Tayyeb said he believes that government according to Islam should satisfy all or the majority of people.

Al-Tayyeb stressed the importance of strengthening the pillars of a new era in which human values, based on religion and oriental civilizations, should be given precedence, the highest of which are science and justice, he said.

Freedom, according to al-Tayyeb, breaks the restrictions of ignorance and tyranny which help to spread fear, cowardice and selfishness, all of which are diseases that destroy individuals, societies, and hence civilizations.

Al-Tayyeb added that he, along with other Egyptians, looks forward to strict rules that criminalize physical and psychological torture in all forms, ensuring that respect will be a basic standard when dealing with citizens.
