Military escalation against Israel absurd, says Islamist presidential hopeful

Military escalation against Israel would be absurd due to Egypt's current political condition, which requires asserting Egypt’s rights through peaceful means, said Islamist presidential hopeful Mohamed Selim al-Awa while campaigning in Alexandria.

Awa also condemned attacks on the Israeli embassy and attempts to set it on fire. “Embassies are under the protection of host countries,” he said.

He said Egypt should adhere to the Camp David Agreement as long as Israel also respects it.

His comments came on the heels of rising tension between Egypt and Israel after the latter killed Egyptian soldiers on Thursday. Egypt has threatened to withdraw its ambassador to Israel, while Israel claims the killings were an innocent mistake. Its defense minister issued a statement of regret on Saturday, but Egypt demands a formal apology.
