Military reinforcements to be deployed to Sinai

A security official announced that a fragile calm had returned to the Sinai Peninsula, adding that authorities would respond to the attack on the headquarters of the army and the police.

An initial response included the closure of the Rafah border crossing until further notice, and the deployment of military and police reinforcements to Sinai in the coming hours, the official said.

A number of decisions will be issued concerning the security situation in Sinai, especially in regard to the Rafah tunnels, the Sheikh Zoweyd area, and the border with the Gaza Strip.

The source added that one soldier had died and seven other military personnel had been injured in Friday's clashes.

On Friday, unidentified gunman armed with heavy weapons attacked five security checkpoints in North Sinai.
