Official: Cancer patients expected to triple in 30 years

There are 1,150 infected with cancerous tumors per million Egyptians, according to statistics of the National Cancer Registry, Amal Ibrahim Samy, director of the National Cancer Registry, told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The state treats 80 percent of these patients in 10 centers affiliated to the Health Ministry, and the rest are treated at their own expense.
The number of patients are expected to triple over the next 30 years. Samy added 113 cases between one hundred thousand citizens are inflicted with cancer annually due to smoking, obesity, neglect of physical activity, the use of chemical pesticides, and pollution.
Samy called for need to raise awareness of the disease and its early detection, which helps in the treatment by a large margin.
The ratio of cancer tumors among women is mostly breast cancer, and liver cancer among men due to the hepatitis C virus, Samy said.
Samy noted that the National Cancer Registry was established seven years ago to monitor and follow up stats of cancer patients
in Egypt, study the causes the disease and work towards reducing it.
