Police man killed in Arish on way home

A police man was killed late Friday by unknown gunmen on his way back home after leaving work at a police station in Arish, North Sinai.

A security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Mohamed Zayed, 40, a police sergeant at Arish’s 2nd police department, sustained gunshots in the head and the right leg while driving his motor bike in Obour, Arish. The body was taken to hospital.

The Sinai Peninsula has witnessed a rise in attacks on police and army personnel since the removal of former president Mohamed Morsy in July by the armed forces over popular protests. Authorities frequently arrest or kill Islamist extremists accused of orchestrating the attacks.
