Khaled Ali: Suleiman can only become president over our dead bodies

Presidential hopeful Khaled Ali criticized the nomination of former Vice President Omar Suleiman, saying it will cause horrendous bloodshed in the country.

In an interview with Tahrir satellite channel on Sunday, Ali doubted Suleiman's claims he could restore stability as president.

“In [Suleiman’s] time, the country was a failure. It is difficult to imagine that he will bring security and stability,” Ali said. “He will cause blood to spill in the country. We insist on the peacefulness of the revolution. He can only become president on our dead bodies.”

Ali, classified by observers as a leftist, is the youngest presidential candidate. He has previously worked as a labor activist, opposing the restoration of privatized companies to state ownership.

Emphasizing that the revolution is continuing, Ali said, “Omar Suleiman was one of the pillars of the former regime.”

Ali also said Suleiman was the first to help Mubarak after the breakout of mass protests on 25 January last year. Suleiman also supported Egypt’s subservience to the US, he said.

Ali said Suleiman is the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces’ candidate in the presidential race.

“I do not believe that SCAF is neutral … Omar Suleiman means destruction — enough said!” he said.

He also said he was optimistic that the election will not be rigged.

“The revolution is being taken lightly and so are the Egyptian people and the crisis they are going through," he said. "There are dirty political games being played to influence the transitional period.”
