Protesters block October bridge; metro resumes after 40-minute halt

Demonstrators blocked the 6th of October Bridge Sunday, disrupting traffic in both directions, while metro services resumed after being blocked by protesters in Sadat Metro Station for 40 minutes.

Clashes between protesters and security forces escalated on the Corniche al-Nile across from the Shepheard Hotel, according to ONtv satellite channel. Security forces fired tear gas at the protesters, who threw stones back at them.

Demonstrators have protested what they see as the government’s disregard for their demands since Friday, the two-year anniversary of the 25 January revolution.

Protesters blocking the metro retreated after passengers started fighting with them.

Abdallah Fawzy, Subway Authority chairperson, said the trains halted when demonstrators stood on the tracks of the first metro line, but the second metro line was not blocked.
