28 political groups call on military to set timeline for power handover

Twenty-eight political movements and coalitions representing protesters in Cairo and Suez said they reject the accusatory tone of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF).

They said the SCAF is not open to criticism of how it is running the country, and is trying to create rifts between revolutionary groups.

In a statement issued on Saturday, they said the April 6 Youth Movement is part of the Egyptian national movement.

The SCAF had released an earlier statement accusing April 6 of trying to sabotage the unity of the people and the army.

The movements called for a Saturday march from the Nour Mosque in Abbasseya and Tahrir Square to the SCAF headquarters.

They said the march will peacefully demand that the SCAF set a timeframe for the handover of power to an elected parliament and president after the end of the six-month transition period it promised.

The movements further called for an end to all military trials of civilians.

Among the signatories to the statement are the Revolution Youth Coalition, the National Association for Change, the Independent Campaign for the Support of ElBaradei, the Youth for Justice and Freedom movement, the Adl Party and the Arbaeen Square Revolutionaries in Suez.

Protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday rejected the SCAF's accusatory statement. Thousands chanted, “Field Marshal, We are all April 6,” and said the SCAF's threatening tone is reminiscent of the Mubarak era.

Approximately 2000 Tahrir protesters marched on the same day to the SCAF headquarters to protest what they described as assaults on protesters in Suez and Alexandria. As they passed by the Nour Mosque in Abbasseya, numbers increased to 4000, but army forces prevented the protesters from advancing, blocking Abbasseya Bridge with armored vehicles and firing shots into the air.
