6 April activist to be tried on assault charges

State prosecutors have referred Ahmed Abu Doma, member of the 6 April opposition movement, to trial on charges of assaulting two police officers during a 3 May demonstration.

Abu Doma, who strenuously denies the charges, has also been charged with damaging public property.

Prosecutors decided to refer the suspect to court after watching video footage of the events in question. The court is expected to hear the case on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 6 April members staged vigils before the attorney-general’s office and the courthouse to demand the release of Abu Doma and other detained members of the movement.

Along with other demands, the 6 April movement calls for constitutional reform and the abolition of Egypt’s longstanding state of emergency.
