Egyptian steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz returns to public life after years of absence

After years of absence from the public, businessman and former politician Ahmed Ezz, the chairman of the Ezz Steel Group, has submitted his candidacy for the elections to the board of directors of the Chamber of Metallurgical Industries at the Federation of Egyptian Industries, scheduled for October 29.

Ezz’s entry into the competition for a seat in the large companies category comes amid strong speculation he could compete for the presidency of the Federation of Industries, succeeding Mohamed al-Sewedy.

This is the first time elections are being held for the positions of president and vice presidents under the new Federation of Industries law.

Fierce competition

The Chamber of Metallurgical Industries is expected to witness fierce competition, with several prominent names competing in the elections. Sources have ruled out the possibility of a unanimous vote.

The Legal Committee overseeing the Federation of Industries elections for the 2025-2029 cycle has closed the call for nominations for membership in the boards of directors of 21 industrial chambers.

The preliminary lists of candidates have been announced, with a one-week deadline for appeals.

The election marathon, which will start with the selection of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Grain Industries, will begin on October 15th and continue until November 12th.

The members of the General Assembly of each chamber select 12 candidates, divided into four candidates for each category within large, medium, and small companies.

Following the elections, the Minister of Industry will appoint three members, bringing the board of directors to 15.

The elected and appointed members of each chamber will represent the General Assembly to elect the Federation’s Board of Directors, including the Federation President and two deputies.

The recent elections notably saw the absence of MP Mohamed al-Marshady, President of the Chamber of Textile Industries, after 33 years on the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

The most prominent candidate in the food sector was Seif Safwan Thabet, representing the Juhayna Food Industries Group.
