
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ayman Ashour, announced on Friday that 36 Egyptian universities have now been included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2026.
The number of Egyptian universities in the ranking increased from 35 in 2025 to 36 in the 2026 edition.
This achievement reflects the continuously developing performance of the higher education and scientific research system in Egypt, he explained, and the significant efforts made by the state to enhance the competitiveness of Egyptian universities both regionally and internationally.
Ashour emphasized that this progress showcases a qualitative development in the academic and research performance of Egyptian universities.
Ranking results
- The ranking results included nine universities among the top 1,000 universities worldwide: the American University in Cairo, the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), and Kafr El-Sheikh University in the 601-800 category, followed by Ain Shams University, Al-Azhar University, Alexandria University, Cairo University, Future University, and Mansoura University in the 801-1000 category.
- It also included Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Aswan University, Beni Suef University, Damietta University, Delta University for Science and Technology, Minya University, New Valley University, Suez University, Tanta University, Sadat City University, and Zagazig University in the 1001-1200 category.
- The Egyptian universities included Assiut University, Benha University, Damanhour University, Fayoum University, Menoufia University, 6th of October University, Port Said University, Sohag University, South Valley University, Suez Canal University, the British University in Egypt, and Zewail City of Science and Technology in the 1201-1500 category.
- Other Egyptian universities included Helwan University, Misr University for Science and Technology, Nile University, and October University for Modern Sciences and Arts in the 1501+ category.
State efforts paying off
The Ministry’s official spokesperson, Adel Abdel-Ghaffar, explained that the progress of Egyptian universities in the Times ranking reflects the continuous development in academic and research performance and the efforts made by Egyptian universities.
He added that the Times Higher Education World University Rankings are based on 17 performance indicators covering various educational, research, and applied aspects, distributed across five main areas encompassing all elements of academic excellence.
The ranking aims to provide a comprehensive and balanced assessment of the performance of universities worldwide in terms of the quality of education, scientific research, innovation, and international openness.
This year’s ranking included approximately 2,191 educational institutions from 115 countries worldwide.
