Liverpool FC chairman admits ‘we considered selling Salah and Van Dijk’

The Chairman of Liverpool FC, Tom Werner, confirmed that Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were close to leaving the club during the last summer transfer window, before extending their contracts until June 2027.

Werner told the Daily Mail on Thursday: “The club’s financial situation made us consider selling Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk last summer. I was in frequent contact with Richard Huyes, the club’s sporting director, asking him about the latest developments in the negotiations with Salah and Van Dijk, and he kept telling me that everything would be fine in the end, which is exactly what happened.”

He noted, “If Richard had told me the negotiations weren’t successful, we would have dealt with it normally, as the club’s financial situation was somewhat precarious.”

Werner concluded, “Ultimately, we were delighted to renew Salah and Van Dijk’s contracts. They are major stars for the team, and their continued presence is extremely important.”
